Compunction Issues
The soil can become compacted and airless which will result in reduced grass growth and increased weed growth due to the competition between these plants. By aerating the soil surface compaction is reduced and the oxygen levels within the soil are increased.
Aeration can also help surface drainage. Depending on the soil type aeration is best carried out in the autumn to prevent the ground drying out too much which can happen in the spring if a hot summer follows.
For more severe compaction problems, the ground is shattered down to 12-15 inches which improves root structure and drainage. |
