Fertiliser
and lime application
Fertiliser applications are used
to feed the ground and encourage good strong plant growth. The level
of application will vary depending on requirement of the grass (i.e.
whether for grazing or hay) and the stocking rate. With equine grazing it
is important not to have too strong a grass for a variety of reasons.
All fertiliser requirements will vary depending on the condition and needs
of the paddock at the time. The first application is made in the spring and
then as the need arises depending on stocking and grass use. Depending
on amount required the application could be made at the same time as harrowing
to reduce compaction and cost.
Lime is added to the ground when the
pH has dropped below 6, which is the ideal for grass growth. Lime
application is integrally linked with soil analysis, which must be
carried out in order to ascertain the soil pH. It is crucial to realise
that grass growth is directly affected by the pH levels of the soil and
will reduce the more acid soil becomes. The best time for lime application
is in the late summer, early autumn time although it can be carried through
out the growing year.
